401(k) rollover

Done saving in a 401(k)? Give it a new job.

A rollover is not just moving an account. It is deciding what that money does from here: monthly income, growth without market losses, or some of both.

When a rolloveris worth a look

  • Retired or retiring soon

Move it out of the company plan into an account in your name.

  • Accounts in many places

Gathering old employer plans in one place makes them easier to manage.

  • Past age 59½

Most plans let you move it even while you are still working.

  • Worried about a downturn

Move it somewhere a market drop cannot cost you principal.

How it works

  1. 01

    Gather scattered accounts

We find every plan, old employers included, and put them in one view.

  2. 02

    Direct transfer

Institution to institution, so no tax and no withholding. I handle the forms.

  3. 03

    Give it a job

Lifetime income, a MYGA, an indexed annuity, or a mix.

Questions people ask

Can I roll over while still working?

After 59½, most plans allow it, and you can usually keep contributing and getting your employer match.

What if I already took the money out?

If you put it back within 60 days, including the amount that was withheld, you may be able to avoid the tax. Call me as soon as you can.

What about a Roth conversion?

That is a separate decision about when you pay the tax. Plan it with your tax advisor; many people convert in pieces over several years.

Is a rollover ever the wrong move?

If you plan to use the age-55 early withdrawal exception, need a feature only your company plan offers, or will spend it all within a year, leaving it where it is may be better.

Does it cost anything?

I do not charge for helping with a rollover. Some plans charge an account closing fee, so I check that with you up front.
